Boo and Bert

 Talk about two dogs that look alike…..keep reading for the update on Boo…..

Hello Miriam,

I’ve attached a picture of Bert(laying down) and Boo(sitting upright), I hope you like them. I can definitely send you more!  Bert is also 2 years old and he and Boo love each other. So far they play and wrestle all the time but they also nap together.

As for who I am: I am originally from Calgary, Alberta, Canada and I’m at Texas A&M doing my residency in veterinary oncology at the veterinary teaching hospital. I grew up with poodles and just adore them!  I am so sorry that Mr. and Mrs. Choates couldn’t keep Boo and I  promise to take good care of him just like  they did.  Boo is clearly a wonderful boy and Bert and I are lucky to have him.

Talk about a small world………….

Circles and small towns…..last night I am walking in Park Hudson, over by the Physicians Center, and I saw this lady walking 2 black Standards.  One of them I was sure was Boo. I stopped her and said “hey, is that Boo?”  She looked at me a little funny and said “yeah….” (in a tone of voice like who is this crazy person and how does she know my dog????)
 
 I told her who I was and that I knew Kenita and Miriam and how that whole connection was made.
 
So, I met Jessie and was introduced to Bert, Boo’s new buddy and we visited for a few minutes.  Looks like a happy ending for all!

Please allow me to introduce “Boo”. Boos parents have been clients of BYD  for a long time. First with a standard named Duke and then Boo. Boo’s mom was recently diagnosed with Leukemia and after much painful consideration, Boo’s parents have decided that Boo really needs to have a new home. Boo’s new home will be chosen with care and we all want to make sure that this SUPER AWESOME dog goes to a FOREVER home. Here is a writeup about Boo from his parents.

Boo is a remarkable dog. We named him Beurre as a tribute to Ed’s Cajun heritage. Rescued at Poodle Rescue of Houston when he was 3 months old. Boo was one of 16 puppies brought to the rescue by a breeder.  All of the puppies were very healthy, well fed and received complete vet examinations and shots at the rescue. Our last standard Poodle, Duke, had always used his nose to bump my elbow when he wanted attention. When we met the puppies Boo came from behind and bumped my elbow, a clear indication that among the hyper mass of puppies he was a gentleman.  Boo never had an accident in the house from the time we brought him home. He learned to wake us at night, sit politely at the door, wait for permission to pass through a door or the yard gate.  We have a granddaughter who is exactly his age. From the time he came to our home he was her buddy and protector. She learned to crawl on him, slept on the floor with him, learned to be “gentle” as he patiently waited. He never knocked her over when she was learning to walk, never once snapped or growled at her.  The first word she said was “Boo”.  While still only sitting, not walking yet, she would slap the floor beside her and he would lay down. Boo loves children and is the kindest, gentlest dog.  He loves to run and play, fetches the ball (drops it away from you when he is done). He comes on command, sits, waits and has a rug by the door where he takes his treats to eat. He will sit on the rug when he wants a treat or if you give him one elsewhere he will go to his rug. He’s ok with riding in the car but prefers not to, will jump up into the back on command. The moments Boo his the most happy is when he can run and play.  Boo loves playing with other dogs. Boo needs a home with space for him to run.  He prefers to lay outside and watch the world to being inside.  I trust this gives you an insight to Boo, truly an exceptional dog. We love and him and miss him.

Why the changes? I have listed my reasons below. As always I appreciate the understanding of our clients. Earlier this year I reduced the rate of stay by $5 to accomodate the rise in gas prices, that however left me operating with a reduced income projection. With the economy and gas prices not stabilizing I am looking at part time jobs starting in September. Your pets will get the same great care. Any job I look for will be at night after the kennel closes. I need the time in the mid afternoon to accomplish a goal that I set for myself. That commitment commences on August 15 and runs for 12 weeks.

As many of you know I had weight loss surgery in July of 2009. Even with the incredible amount of weight I did lose, I did not hit my goal weight. I am 30lbs shy of it. I am determined to reach that goal. I am now under the care of a super great trainer. Philip Archibald works at Innovative Fitness, College Station. I met Trevor Carney, the owner through my association with ABWA-specifically the LWEN chapter that I belong to. I will be on a strict diet, and an aggressive weight and cardio workout 5x a week; Monday through Friday. I am looking forward to this challenge.  Lacys were developed in the Texas Hill Country by the four Lacy brothers (Frank, George, Ewin, and Harry), who immigrated from Kentucky to Burnet County, Texas, in 1858. Traditional wisdom, as well as Lacy family history, holds that Lacys are the result of Greyhound/scent hound/coyote cross. Â
 Multiple sources also suggested that the presence of Lacys in the Hill Country strongly influenced Fred Gipson, who was raised in adjacent Mason County and was best known for his novel Old Yeller. The Blue Lacy Game Dog filled the needs of colonial Americans for well over a century on ranches in the Southwestern US. Â
 The decline of the family-owned ranching industry, as well as the introduction of technology such as all-terrain vehicles, brought the Lacy breed near extinction; however, its rediscovery as a masterful hunting companion has dramatically increased the demand for Lacys. They are now the most common breed used by United States Trappers.  The origin of the unusual slate blue coat and nose is a genetic rarity. All Lacy’s have minimal to full white markings on their brisket and most of the time on paw or paws. The light gun-metal gray to almost black Lacy’s are classified in color as blue. The red, yellow to cream Lacy’s are classified in color as red.
The tri-colored Lacy’s are blue with red markings over their eyes, on muzzle, under tail, and down the legs. They are classified in color as tri. Both the red and tri-colored Lacy’s hold the name Blue Lacy due to the blue-color gene they possess. All Blue Lacy’s eyes are very bright and distinctive orange to yellow in color. Boone

 

Every once in a while, we get to do a good deed. I believe in supporting the community that supports me. I support Impact Animal Foundation. When the spring session ended, Boone’s foster home was no longer available and Impact asked if I could foster him. Boone is a fearless, energetic dog who also loves to show affection. Nothing seems to bother him – he is ready for every new adventure that comes his way. Boone will need lots of room to romp, and an attentive family that provides him regular exercise, interactive play and loads of affection. Boone would also love to have another dog to play with. His young life began by being abandoned on a country road, but his wonderful personality is certain to help him find his forever home and bring a happy ending to his story!
